RA (noun)
r-a; /Are@y/
Definition: Resident Advisor, a person who supervises college students living in dorms.
Attested: I first heard this term during orientation week at a floor meeting, while being introduced to our RA's. Example: "Our RA told us we were making too much noise during quiet hours."
Etymology: This term must have arisen from the abbreviation of Resident Advisor. RA is probably common across the country at other colleges with dorms, so it is not isolated in Ithaca. However, this term probably does not extend outside of colleges and universities.

ResNet (noun)
/rE@znEt/
Definition: A subscription service that lets students in Cornell connect their computers directly to the Cornell Campus Network and the Internet from the residential hall rooms.
Attested: Like Resphone, this term was made known to Cornellians in a very early stage. In fact, the high speed T1 connection was one of the very reasons why I decided to apply for a residential hall as compared to some private housing near Cornell.
Example: "With Resnet directly available in each and single dormitary room, internet connection is just a mouse click away."
Etymology: Like Resphone, ResNet was just another logical abbreviation that was coined up in 1994. With network connection available around the clock, it really had made the life of students in cornell a more connected one. With a bandwidth of 1.5 Mbps, it is no surprise that many students here have gigabtyes of MP3 songs that are downloaded from the web.

ResPhone (noun)
/rE@zfown/
Definition: It is an abbreviation for residential hall phone services available in all residential housing rooms in Cornell.
Attested: This is one of the earliest term that students get to know about even before coming to Cornell. In the package of papers that was mailed to us when we were accepted into Cornell, we were given the option to apply for the phone services.
Example: "My Resphone in my room do not have long distance call services, so if you need to call out to another state, you have to do it using another phone."
Etymology: The shortening of the word from Residential phone service to just Resphone is a very natural thing to do. I find the term "Resphone" a very cool term to be given to such an old and basic telephone service.

RPU (noun)
r-Pee-uuu; /Arpiyu/
Deifinition: Robery Purcell Community Center the north campus community center.
Attested: I first heard this term on a campus tour duing my first days at Cornell.
Example: "Are you going to RPU for dinner."
Etymology: Robert Purcell Community Center was originally Robert Purcell Community Center; however a few years ago its name was changed. despite this change and the fact that the students that live there have when it was RPU have graduated, the name RPU has stuck. The exact reason why this is the case is unclear. The most likely reason is that RPU is rolls off the Tongue much easier than RPCC.
